Comparing Miraculous Ladybug’s Sentimonsters and Companion (2025)

I just watched Companion (2025) and as a long-time fan of all things Senti/Peacock who’s also written multiple fics dealing with the matter, I needed to write down my thoughts. This review/analysis naturally contains spoilers for Companion as well as for the last few seasons of Miraculous.

The idea of artificially created lifeforms is a very old concept in science fiction and fantasy, from Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein (I have a whole fic dedicated to exploring the parallels between Victor Frankenstein and the Peacock Miraculous) to Harlan Ellison's I Have No Mouth and I Must Scream, and Philip K. Dick’s Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep? But in recent years, at least two distinct pieces of media (Miraculous and the 2025 film Companion) have explored this theme through a disturbingly similar lens. Both feature beings created to serve human desires, only to grapple with their own identity, autonomy, and oppression. While Miraculous presents this idea through the magical constructs known as Sentimonsters, Companion takes a more grounded sci-fi horror approach with an AI-driven protagonist. Despite their different genres and target audiences, both works reveal extremely disturbing truths about control, manipulation, and what it truly means to be human (or not!)

For those who don’t know, in Miraculous, Sentimonsters are magical beings brought to life through the Peacock Miraculous. While originally used to create temporary creatures, the show eventually reveals that full-fledged people can be Sentimonsters as well. The most striking example is Adrien Agreste, heavily implied (and later confirmed) to be a Sentimonster created by his parents. This means that Adrien’s entire existence is conditional on an external object, the amok, a magical feather, remaining intact. The same is true for other Sentimonsters like Félix, whose awareness of his nature sets him apart from Adrien. Félix understands that his autonomy is, to a certain extent, limited, and that at any moment, someone could seize his amok and force him into submission or even erase him entirely if he isn’t careful.

Now compare this to Companion, where the protagonist, Iris, is a highly advanced AI companion engineered to be the “perfect” girlfriend (they also use the word “sexbot/fuckbot” in the movie). Like Adrien, she initially believes she is fully human, unaware that her existence has been engineered for the pleasure of another: her reddit incel boyfriend, Josh. This is very obviously the target demographic of Empathix, the corporation who makes these AI companions, and it is only a stretch further than the inflatable sex dolls that currently exist.

But as the film progresses, Iris begins to piece together the horrifying truth: she has no real agency. Her thoughts, feelings, and even her ability to resist are dictated by external programming. She was never meant to have a will of her own, only to fulfill the desires of the man who “owns” her. She also finds out while playing around with her own settings that Josh has set her intelligence level at a frankly insulting percentage.

Both Miraculous and Companion paint a picture of what it means to be a being created for someone else’s control. The most horrifying realization is the fragility of their existence. Iris, Adrien and Félix (and other Sentis) exist only because their creators allow it. A simple command, a single external force, could end them in an instant. They are hostages to the whims of those who hold their metaphorical (or literal) leash.

The “Perfect” Creation: The illusion of choice

In Companion, Josh chooses Iris as his ideal partner, shaping her to his desires. She was never supposed to question him, never supposed to resist, just love him unconditionally. Similarly, in Miraculous, the implication that Émilie Agreste (and by extent, Gabriel) created Adrien as the “perfect son” raises disturbing ethical questions. Did they construct Adrien simply to have a son who would never defy them? A son they could mold into whatever they wanted? If Adrien is a Sentimonster, then every act of obedience he performs is tainted by the horrifying possibility that it isn’t truly his own choice. I could write an entire separate post about Émilie Agreste and her role in this situation. In my opinion, she is far from an innocent bystander. As I’ve mentioned before (and explored in many of my fics) Émilie played a role in this, albeit a more subtle one compared to Gabriel. The way Gabriel speaks to his son, much like the way Josh speaks to Iris, is not the language of a loving parent or partner, but that of someone addressing their device. In other words; an owner speaking to their possession.

Félix, who understands his nature better than Adrien, is there to show us what happens when an artificial being rebels. He refuses to be controlled, snatches his amok from his father’s still warm corpse, and actively manipulates others (Gabriel/Monarch, and Ladybug) to secure his autonomy. In Companion, Iris undergoes a similar transformation. Once she realizes what she is, she refuses to accept her predetermined role. The twist of the film comes when she begins to fight back against Josh’s control, proving that even beings that were created for submission will, given the chance, seek freedom.

Both narratives raise the same questions: If a person is created to be subservient, do they ever truly have free will? And if they do break free, are they still bound by their origins, or can they create their own destiny?

I think maybe the most chilling commonality between Miraculous and Companion is the ease with which their protagonists can be erased. 

In Miraculous, if a Sentimonster’s amok is destroyed, they cease to exist. A single moment of destruction can erase a life as though it never happened. Similarly, in Companion, Iris’s entire existence is tethered to her programming. If Josh (or anyone else) decides to “shut her down,” she could be wiped out. Maybe not in an instant, but there are multiple fail-safes and available solutions to destroy her.

Going off on a slight tangent, I think this parallels real-world fears about artificial intelligence and disposable labor. If AI beings ever gain sentience, would they be treated as living entities, or as products to be discarded when they are no longer convenient? The same question applies to Sentimonsters. Even though they think, feel, and love, they are ultimately considered “lesser” by their creators. Gabriel, in particular, seems to consider Sentimonsters other than his son as tools, easily replaced and ultimately expendable. They are nothing more than playthings for the incredibly wealthy and immoral; the infamous 1%. This is starkly illustrated in the Gabriel Agreste episode, which makes an unmistakable nod to the Rothschild Surrealist Ball, a real-world gathering synonymous with excess, exclusivity, and the decadence of the elite.

Iris, the Senticousins and Kagami are constantly at the mercy of forces beyond their control. Their existence is conditional, fragile, and, worst of all, subject to the whims of people who see them as objects rather than individuals.

“But I am real”: Iris, Adrien, Félix, and the existential dismissal of artificial beings.

Another important aspect I wanted to touch on and that immediately made me want to write a full comparative analysis while I was watching the movie was the existential crisis that automatically comes with finding out the truth about yourself. I have dealt with this subject matter in fics like Amor Fati and perhaps most prominently in The Postmodern Prometheus (where the Sentibeing character must quite literally defend their own personhood in front of an entire audience of sceptics).

In Companion, Iris, after realizing her true nature, also desperately tries to argue for her own personhood. She brings up memories, emotions, and experiences that she believes make her real, challenging the idea that her artificial origin invalidates them. Josh, the man who supposedly loved her, dismisses her entirely. No matter how many valid arguments she presents, he refuses to see her as anything more than an object, something created for him, not someone with her own will.

This moment evokes a real-world phenomenon we see not just in discussions about AI ethics but also within fandom discourse, particularly regarding the Sentimonster reveal(s). When it became clear that Adrien (and, by extension, Félix) was a Sentimonster, the fandom’s response was fractured. Some fans, much like Josh, outright rejected the idea that a Sentimonster could be considered a real person. Others, like Iris herself, argued that it didn’t matter how Adrien was created; his experiences, emotions, and struggles were real, and to dismiss them was both cruel and reductive.

But let’s break this parallel down further.

In Companion, the moment Iris discovers she is artificial is gut-wrenching. She cycles through grief, denial, and finally defiance, desperately trying to hold onto her sense of self. She argues that if she feels love, if she remembers her life, if she experiences joy and pain, then those things must be real. “I remember when we met,” she insists. “I remember how I felt.”

Josh’s response is cold, dismissive, and utterly devoid of empathy. He insists that none of it was real. She was built for him, and that fact alone invalidates everything she feels. It doesn’t matter how deeply she believes in her own personhood; he has already decided she is less than human.

I alsothink this sort of mirrors the way Colt Fathom, Félix’s father, treated Félix when he was alive. He viewed him as nothing more than a hollow imitation of a real son. Rather than showing love or treating Félix as his own, Colt saw him as something disposable, a creation without true value, even went so far as to call Félix a monster, outright denying his right to be seen as a real person. There's something to be said about this, and the etymology of the word Sentimonster (a fusion of sentience/sentiment and monster); people acknowledging their emotions while simultaneously condemning them as unnatural. Both Iris and Félix fight against this very idea: the refusal to see them as anything more than artificial, no matter how human they prove themselves to be. By the end of Season 5, the word itself is viewed as taboo; and it is preferable to use the alternative; Sentibeings.

Now look at how a segment of the Miraculous fandom reacted to the Sentimonster theory and its eventual confirmation. Many fans insisted that if Adrien was a Sentimonster, then his entire identity was meaningless. His choices, his dreams, his autonomy are all reduced to the idea that he was merely an artificial construct, programmed to obey. Some fans rejected the theory outright because they didn’t want to believe that their favorite character could be something “less than human.” Others used it to argue that Adrien had no real agency, that every decision he ever made was just the byproduct of magical programming.

In both cases, we see an emotional refusal to accept the idea that a being created artificially could be just as “real” as a naturally born human. The dismissal of Iris by Josh mirrors the dismissal of Adrien and Félix by parts of the fandom: a refusal to acknowledge their emotions, choices, and self-awareness simply because of the way they were brought into existence.

The search for meaning: “Then what am I?”

Another heartbreaking similarity between Iris and the Sentibeings is their desperate search for meaning once they realize the truth. The revelation shakes the foundation of who they are.

Iris tries to reclaim her identity by insisting that her memories and feelings matter. 

Félix, upon discovering he is a Sentimonster, goes to great lengths to secure his amok and the Peacock brooch (the instrument used to create Sentimonsters), ensuring that no one else can control him. He doesn’t care if the world sees him as real, he just wants the power to define himself.

Adrien, unknowingly living under this truth, struggles with control in a different way. If he is a Sentimonster, then his entire life has been orchestrated by his father. Every act of obedience, every moment of self-doubt, takes on a sinister new meaning. But unlike Félix, he hasn’t been given the chance to fight for his autonomy because he doesn’t even know he needs to.

Iris and the Sentibeings all share the same existential crisis: If I was made, not born, do I even have a soul? The tragedy is that the people around them, the ones with the power, refuse to give them an answer that acknowledges their humanity.

The “Creators” and their ultimate power over the narrative

Yet another disturbing parallel is how both Josh (Companion) and the Agreste couple (Miraculous) act as godlike figures in their creations’ lives.

Josh created (or at least “purchased”) Iris as an AI companion, expecting her to love him unconditionally. When she starts thinking for herself, he refuses to acknowledge her autonomy because doing so would mean admitting that his control over her was never moral in the first place. He would rather kill her than accept her independence.

Gabriel and Émilie created Adrien to be the “perfect son”. Obedient, controlled, and incapable of defying orders. If Adrien ever realized the truth, Gabriel would likely react the same way Josh did: with total, unwavering rejection of his son’s self-awareness.

The fandom’s split reaction is interesting. The creators of Miraculous left the Sentimonster revelation ambiguous for a long time, knowing how controversial it would be. Some fans outright rejected it because they couldn’t bear the implications. Others (including myself) reveled in the tragedy, seeing it as an incredible character-driven narrative. But in the end, the power to define “reality” always lies with those who control the narrative, whether it’s Josh, the Agrestes, or the showrunners themselves.

This also echoes a real-world phenomenon: when marginalized or oppressed groups argue for their own personhood and autonomy, they are often met with dismissal by those in power. The refusal to acknowledge self-awareness as legitimate is, after all, a recurring theme in human history.

This debate matters, ultimately. The tension between creation and autonomy is one of the most enduring ethical dilemmas in fiction (there are so many works out there dealing with those themes, and I'll devour every single one of them). Companion and Miraculous both ask the same fundamental question: Does it matter where you came from, or does it only matter who you are?

The answer should be obvious but time and time again, characters like Iris and Félix are forced to fight for the right to their own identity. And, well, disturbingly, the reaction of their oppressors (whether it’s Josh dismissing Iris’s pleas, Gabriel tightening his grip on Adrien, or fans denying that a Sentimonster could be human) mirrors the real-world fear of acknowledging artificial or constructed beings as valid individuals.

CBS News Confirmed identified more than 30 accounts impersonating people with Down syndrome across Instagram, YouTube and TikTok. Some used deepfakes or AI faceswaps. Others mimicked real disability advocates' language and repackaged it to pass as authentic. Only a few accounts disclosed the use of AI.

CONTENT WARNINGS: descriptions of myths that include violence and bestiality, mention of slavery

I first heard of this book when Adrienne Mayor was a guest on the Mindscape podcast. I found her ideas and arguments to be interesting, so I figured her book would expand on the concepts she explored on the podcast.

Overall, I think this book is an accessible intro for readers interested in classical studies and the history of science. Mayor writes clearly and without a lot of specialized terminology, so even if you're new to classics, you won't find this book difficult. I think the chapter about Talos was the most convincing and the most well-done, bringing together textual analysis and art history in a way I found intellectually pleasing.

As a scholar, however, I think this book could have gone a bit further, especially with its analysis of myths and texts. Mayor summarizes most of the myths she discusses, which is all well and good for situating the reader in the texts. But what I really wanted was more specific evidence and close reading: were there any interesting language choices used to describe this automaton? Did the Greeks have a certain vocabulary for artificial beings? As it stands, it felt like Mayor's textual analysis relied on general ideas, and while fine as a starting point, I really think it could have been pushed.

I also think there's some room to apply critical frameworks such as posthumanism and transhumanism theory. Applying such theories would enhance the meanings Mayor is trying to get at, but in all fairness, this may he beyond the scope of the book. Mayor seems to be relaying a history of ideas rather than trying to get at their interpretation, so maybe her book will function well as a springboard for other scholars and students to do this work.

Lastly, I do think this book could have been framed a little better to help me as a reader see some of the through-lines. There were moments when I wasn't sure how each of Mayor's examples fit in with the overall theme of "robots" or "artificial life," so maybe a better framing device would be the theme of biotechne rather than the sci fi approach that the book currently uses. Similarly, some further delineation between what constitutes "technology" versus magic (and even just "art") would have been helpful for seeing how each individual chapter builds upon the previous.

TL;DR: Gods and Robots is a good overview of the history of artifical life and technology in the ancient Greek world. This book is perhaps most useful as a springboard for further analysis, and historians, art historians, and literary scholars will find plenty to build on.

A vision of a desolate landscape with massive egg-shaped objects covered in square tiles - registration centers

A world perpetually under a bright starry sky or a very cloudy sunset, with artificial lighting, evenly dispersed flat buildings and structures. There are other planets, it seems, but even this one is quite packed with meaningless, evenly spaced concrete, plastic, glass and steel.

This world is scarcely populated by functionally immortal beings. First there are "Others", which are like super-powered versions of a regular human with an alien color palette and an altered personality (a lot more open and confident - not entirely positive or that faithful to the original, more like a confident alter-ego override). These are created through a mysterious process that involves at least one killing, and as a result a new and powerful Other is born "over the human" + sentient eyes on their fingers that act like an additional intelligence for control and emotional regulation of such an advanced being. The "main character" of the story is a woman whose Other looks like a mix of Amethyst and Huntress Wizard, and who, according to trace analysis performed by her fingers, has seemingly been created without murder.

There's also a faceless human in a jade suit - faceless might be an exaggeration, he has a distinct eyebrow ridge and a nose on his cream-colored smooth head. "Human" might also not be quite appropriate, as we'll see later.

At some point later these three meet another Other, who looks as if the aroace flag has adapted to life after an apocalypse. And there *is* something to adapt to - lots of hostile robots and drones that infest the buildings, alien bandits (for example, yeti humanoid owls), etc. Structures and dangers are dispersed very evenly throughout this world - you step out of one cluster and into another, out of a facility with armored drones into sewer canals with bandits.

There is a time when the faceless man is captured by "bandits" and they interrogate him on how to use the remote. The remote, well, looks like a glazed gingerbread button phone, and is a powerful instrument worthy of fear. The faceless man eventually half-shows, half-suggests that it is safe, and the "bandit" leader types a word on it. The remote is a transportation device - any number or word you enter teleports you to a certain coordinate in this world. It is hard to track, but relatively safe because of the uniformity of the world. And so the faceless man disappears into ether (imagine like a video game inventory screen of esoteric text and icons over an abstract blue pattern), where there is a snapshot of him (like a character portrait) looking very disturbing, with cloth-like tears and holes in his face, and he chuckles that his likeness was captured in such a bad state (so he updates himself and the picture updates to). He then falls out of the ether along with the "bandit" leader. (I say "bandit" in brackets because they are not in it for the money, it is a kind of unreal hostile relationship between immortals and semi-mortals that is hard to explain)

Later on, it turns out the immortals of this world are locked in a perpetual battle with a cosmic empire of crystal-looking bugs (which were responsible for the drones and the many hostile machines). They are incapable of killing immortals, so it's a war to break them psychologically - there are colossal crawling "PTSD tanks" that forcefully project visions and sounds of the most traumatizing memories, there are giant diamond-shaped spinning furnaces that create such memories in the first place (a conveyer belt leisurely pulls you onto a horribly fast rotating disk and into a storm of fire where you are burned to ashes - but, of course, you don't die, because you are an immortal. Must be quite a memorable experience - and, for the purposes of the bugs, the characteristic images and sounds of the swirling hellfire are easy to reproduce). They have a mix of medieval feudal and hive-like hierarchy, and the most important one present (politely called on to observe a battle) was a cream-colored grub with smooth geometric sides and two diamond heads - the right one is poorly defined, the left one produces an entire new figure from its mouth (this two-headed asymmetrical grub seems to be the main form of the crystal bugs, with everyone else being a caste, a cyborg and / or robot)

The dream ended when our main characters have come with a plan to counteract all this hellish machinery (that includes the main girl even discarding her immortal form for a moment and acting like an ordinary human).

P. S. Something that is hard to describe or explain with *what* happens, but you simply know through *how* it happens:

1) The bugs are very, very far from truly souring the experience of immortals. It is like a giant game to them, and at most they are avoiding a particular failure state in that game. Some are more serious, like Others, some are more light-hearted and are having fun through all the adventures, like the faceless man. It is also like a game in the sense that immortals have a degree of knowledge and control of their experience of reality unimaginable to mere humans or bugs - in fact, it is suggested that a Matrix kind of situation is going on, and the immortals have either descended into this reality to really, actually just play, or ascended from it into contact with the underlying "back-end software" or another kind of transcendental universality.

Most of my life, I adhere to the concept of "everything is possible". I don't want to admit that there is something impossible in this world. As long as we can imagine it, it is possible. The possibility that this will actually appear in the world may be extremely small. Even zero whole and some six thousandths. But it will still be there. That's more than zero. And, as long as it is more than zero, I will not accept the fact that it is impossible.

Now, the part of the time I spend alone with myself, I feel depressed. And I feel like I have no room for change. I'm just afraid to believe that they exist, because it will mean that it's time to take responsibility for your life.

This is a crucial piece of the puzzle for ensuring that you properly distinguish ENTP from common mistypes such as ENFP, ESTP, ENFJ, ESFP, or ENTJ.

The instructions state that you should do a comparison between at least two types. It isn't enough to just confirm the type you think you are, because that makes you vulnerable to confirmation bias. You must also examine the other types enough to rule them all out. You say you've "settled" on ENTP, which implies that you've already done the process of eliminating all the other types on your own? BS Analysis no. 3: "Karn Evil 9", "2112', and Their Relevance to AI Technology

This is gonna be a long one. Why? It's two essay ideas rolled into one: I'm making a comparison of the plots of these two prog epics, and also analyzing how their messages are both relevant to the modern world, especially with the advent of AI. So, I’ve covered Emerson, Lake, and Palmer’s (ELP) other famous epic, “Tarkus”, on my blog before (link here), and I’ve covered “2112” before by sharing my fan theory (link here). So, this should be somewhat familiar territory for anyone reading this, but I’ll be doing a recap of both bands and the plots of both works. “Karn Evil 9” was released on ELP’s fourth studio album, Brain Salad Surgery, in November 1973. The song is a Level Two Epic (as is “2112”) (explanation link here), as it overviews a world in the future, ruined by technology, in three impressions. These impressions offer some insight into this world, each from a different perspective. Due to the limitations of vinyl records, the first impression is divided into two parts. Part One of the 1st Impression gives an overview of the state of humanity in this world: suffering and lacking compassion. It also starts the overview of the actual “karn evil” (carnival, get it?), which goes over several odd exhibits: bishops’ heads in jars, a stripper, and Jesus in a hat. In the second part of the 1st impression, the show continues with a “real blade of grass”, a “performance on guillotine”, “seven virgins and a mule” (not touching that one!), and a rag-time band. This “show” helps to highlight the things that are considered wonders in this future: pain as entertainment, and things like nature and religion are considered so odd that they are included in this carnival sideshow. The story shifts in the 3rd Impression, which details the struggles of a rebellion against some sort of artificial intelligence. This rebellion was hinted at in the opening lyrics of Part One of the 1st Impression. The rebellion scene includes a direct confrontation with a computer, ending with the computer ominously saying: “I’m perfect, not you.” The critique of technology is paramount in the story and helps to drive the main conflict between humanity and the technology it created.  “2112”, on the other hand, is a little less directly about technology. Rush’s 1976 Level Two Epic (link) describes a person finding a guitar in a cave in a world where the average citizen is forbidden from making their own art. All art and media are regulated by the autocratic Priests of Syrinx, and when this person presents their guitar to these Priests, it is destroyed. The anonymous hero then wanders home, dreaming of a world in which people can create freely. They wake up from this dream, deeply depressed and now unable to find satisfaction in their existence, and then the ending is left ambiguous. On the surface, this has little to do with technology, other than taking place in the future. However, a few lines in the music and the liner notes hint at a greater role for technology: in the section “The Temples of Syrinx”, these lines are sung, “Our great computers/Fill our hallowed halls.” These “great computers” are located in the Temples of Syrinx, and it is implied that the Priests utilize them to run the world of “2112”, by saying: “All the gifts of life/are held within our walls”. This is also confirmed by the liner notes: “…to think that every single facet of life is regulated and direct from within! Our books, our music, our work and play are all looked after by the benevolent wisdom of the Priests…”. The fact that these “great computers” lie within the “hallowed halls” of a Temple, and are looked after by Priests suggests that the world of “2112” worships technology, and relies on it for its continued survival.

Both of these works suggest the concept of technology replacing the role of governing bodies and the consequences of such action. In “2112”, not only do these “great computers” regulate the lives of the citizens of that world; they also provide state-sanctioned entertainment: art is monopolized by these computers and the “Priests” that oversee them. In “Karn Evil 9”, it is implied by the 3rd Impression that the computers in that world were taking over governmental roles as well, and the 1st Impression implies that the attachment to technology in that world had rendered religion and spirituality obsolete, as well desensitizing people to the suffering of others. 

Both of these works also directly deal with the commodification and regulation of art through technology. In “2112”, this is more blatant with both the lyrics and the liner notes explicitly stating that art is regulated through the Priests of Syrinx, and cannot be made by the average citizen, leading them only to consume what the Priests put out. “Karn Evil 9” is a little less direct with its approach, instead taking the lens of a carnival showcasing human misery as its main attractions, and through the confrontation with the computer at the end. By being included in the same piece, one may infer that it was, in fact, the computer running this “carnival”, and its attractions consist of the entertainment of the world of “Karn Evil 9”. 

Through this, one can immediately draw parallels to today’s controversy of the use of AI technology in art: many artists have protested against the use of AI technology (source 1),  corporations have already begun to use AI art in their campaigns (source 2), the Grammy’s have allowed music created with AI elements the opportunity to win a Grammy* (source 3), and Forbes predicts that AI can be used in the music industry to help identify common elements of hit songs (source 4).  Technology appears to be advancing towards a point in which artists may be overlooked in favor of using AI technology or using algorithms to help write music. However, it is important to note that the majority of AI present today are language-learning models, and therefore scan their databases based on input, and spit out an answer. There is no real “intelligence” to these models, therefore they cannot become the malevolent computer of “Karn Evil 9”. However, who is to say that the Priests of Syrinx of “2112” weren’t using advanced algorithms to help run their society and create propaganda (sounds like a cool avenue for a bs theory…)?

This is not to suggest that we are on a path to a world like “Karn Evil 9” or “2112”; we do not currently have the technology to be developing in such a direction that AI will be able to govern, or assist in governing significant amounts of people, as well as producing art and media for this governing power. Neither suggested is that all modern technology is harmful: advancements in the medical field specifically have led to people living longer, healthier lives. In short, this is not meant to be a fear-mongering essay. However, the overwhelming connection to modern technology, especially the Internet and the emerging field of AI, has been disconnecting people from their local communities, and perhaps making people a little more jaded and callous towards each other. Many people terminally online, especially those caught in echo chambers seem to lack compassion for each other, much like the people in the world of “Karn Evil 9”. There are also some glaring parallels between the “Priests of Syrinx” of the world of “2112”, and the worship of modern-day Silicon Valley tech billionaire moguls, with their cult-like followings (cough cough ELON MUSK cough cough). And between both of them, AI technology using algorithms could be potentially used to take power away from the artists.

One last thing that is important to note is the historical circumstances of the 1970s, and specifically what motivated these two bands to create their respective works. What made them write work that could be interpreted in this sense, and how has it maintained relevancy over the past 50 years?

“2112”, specifically, was created at a point in Rush’s career during which they were delivered an ultimatum after their last album, Caress of Steel, was a commercial failure. This song in particular was written as a giant middle finger to the music industry, doubling down on their morals: the record company wanted an album with shorter, more commercial songs, and instead they got a 20-minute, side-long, science fiction epic about music censorship. Certainly, the main theme in “2112” is not necessarily about technology, Rush were quite fond of using synthesizers later in their career, but more about the censorship and regulation of art. Surely, the modern AI debate is also not about the technology itself, but rather how it is used: censoring the humanity from art. It is about the suppression of creativity, a trait that can only be possessed by intelligent creatures. It is this theme that makes it applicable to society nearly 50 years later. In “2112”, the suppression of art made by humans was to spread propaganda and to control the population, in modern society, it could be more about making a marginal profit for businesses. 

“Karn Evil 9”, however, was more inspired by the rapidly changing technology of the 1970s, much of which Emerson, Lake, and Palmer helped to popularize in music, like monophonic and later polyphonic synthesizers and electric percussion. It is therefore more change that lies at the heart of “Karn Evil 9”: it is a rebellion against technology that drives the plot forward, and brings it to its ambiguous conclusion, with the computer stating that it is the perfect being, not the human. Does the computer ultimately win? Does anything at all change in “Karn Evil 9”? Both of these questions remain applicable to modern society as well, as society is still rapidly undergoing changes in technology. It ironically change that has given “Karn Evil 9” its staying power. 

Both of these works have remained relevant because the issues expressed in them have remained so: censorship and regulation of art has been an issue for centuries and has entered a new debate with the advent of AI technology. And, of course, what has been more stable in life than constant change, especially the relationship between humanity and technology? These are broad themes that can be applied to the debate of AI in art, landing squarely on the side of “art is for people to make”, however can be applied to many aspects of life.

*Although it is important to note that the AI is incapable of winning a Grammy, and a song made only with AI is not eligible
